Mentoring for Success

The benefits of having a mentor and being a mentor has regularly been spoken of at dawn events since the network started. Speakers often extol the virtues of their personal mentors across the different stages of their careers and have encouraged the audience to identify a mentor to approach within their personal or professional lives.

With this in mind as we designed the ‘Investing in you’ series in 2018 the dawn team wanted to dedicate an evening to mentoring that also was interactive with the events speakers. We partnered with the Bloom network and Facebook kindly hosted this event in their new offices just off Oxford Street, where we were joined by Caroline Manning, Strategy Director at Initiative and Bloom VP, Akama Davies Head of Brand Performance at Oath and founder of We Are Stripes, Gemma Appleford Senior Planner at Mediacom and Bloom Mentee, Natalie Pennicotte-Collier The Mindcoach, Personal Wellbeing MSC MBCT and Amy Watt, Founder of Megawatt Coaching.

The panel took the attendees through their own careers and personal experiences with mentors, which ranged from cavalier career changes rectified by the sage guidance of a mentor, the need to be clear about the type of support needed to understand whether it’s mentoring or coaching needed, recognition that as in any relationship personalities clash despite what may feel like a good fit at the beginning but this shouldn’t be a general discouragement and the value of an mentor outside of your industry and chosen field.

A first for dawn, the speakers then broke off into five groups of ten attendees to hold a more practical discussion group. With a range of speakers with different experiences, including two professional coaches, each group had a different style to their individual sessions from breathing exercises, questioning their groups current networks to identify whether they had unrecognised mentors, tools and techniques to curate energy and removing barrier, to methods of addressing the best way of having an honest conversation without the need to impress.
